Blood drive features firefighters vs. police

Saturday event at ACM sponsored by state police Explorers Post 52

CUMBERLAND — In the spirit of honoring heroes who risk their lives every day, the Maryland State Police Explorers Post 52 is hosting a friendly competitive blood drive — Boots vs. Badges. Donors will say which group they are donating for whether it be boots (firefighters) or badges (law enforcement), and the agency with the most donors will win, according to state police Tfc. Robert Giffin.

“The first annual blood drive is being held in the spirit of trying to help the community, being a good citizen and learning to be helpful to others,” said Giffin. “We, as a community, are extremely low on blood. One pint of blood can save up to three lives.”

The American Red Cross will be taking blood on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the gym at Allegany College of Maryland.

A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood and Type O is the blood type most often requested by hospitals, according to the American Red Cross. More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year, many of whom will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.

The Explorers thought that having a little friendly competition would be a good way to get local firefighters and law enforcement involved, said Giffin.

During the blood drive, donors will get the chance to interact with firefighters and police, to enter into a 50/50 raffle to win gift certificates to local businesses, and food will be available. Donors will also get a chance to see state police medevac helicopter Trooper 5, the MSP Hummer and the new 2013 Chevrolet Caprice police cruiser.

The MSP Explorers is a group comprised of 11 youth members ranging in age from 15 to 21 who are interested in law enforcement and the military. The Explorers has participated in a variety of activities, including the recent National Night Out held at Country Club Mall.

It is suggested that those who plan to donate blood to contact the Red Cross and schedule a time to donate. Go to www.redcrossblood.org (enter MSP) or call 800-Red-Cross. Donors can also schedule a time on the Boots vs. Badges Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Boots-vs-Badges-Cumberland-MD/436684453114296
