Finan Center staff member stabbed; patient charged

Facility resident charged with attempted murder, assault after seriously injuring victim

CUMBERLAND — A Finan Center employee suffered serious injuries when he was stabbed in the back of the head by a combative resident late Monday morning.

The victim was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center by a Cumberland Fire Department ambulance after being stabbed in the back of the head with a 7-inch galvanized spike that remained lodged in his head, according to Maryland State Police.

The resident — 50-year-old Craig Harris Zello of Hagerstown — was taken into custody by state police troopers who were called to the in-patient psychiatric hospital on Country Club Road at about 10 a.m.

Zello confronted the troopers but was taken into custody without further incident. Troopers then assisted medical staff with tending to the victim.

Following consultation with the Allegany County Office of the State’s Attorney, state police charged Zello with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and weapons violations.

Zello was processed for arrest at the Cumberland barrack early in the afternoon. He was held in the Allegany County Detention Center without bond after appearing before a district court commissioner.

Police said the victim was summoned to assist medical staff of the Finan Center with a combative patient when the incident occurred.

The C3I Unit and Allegany County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.

The investigation reportedly includes determining how Zello was able to obtain the weapon used in the attack.
