GRANTSVILLE — Thanks to a $233,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Mountain Laurel Medical Center will establish a new satellite center in Grantsville in the spring, according to Beth Little-Terry, chief executive officer with MLMC.
“We are delighted to help a community that is in need of access to health care in their community,” said Little-Terry.
The town doesn’t have a health center and the council and Mayor Paul Edwards have been voicing the need for one for a while, according to Little-Terry.
MLMC aims at providing quality, safe, accessible primary health care, wellness promotion and education to all individuals in the county regardless of their ability to pay. MLMC focuses on the uninsured and the underinsured, according to Little-Terry.
“We don’t turn anyone away,” said Little-Terry.
MLMC offers clinical and support services that are tailored to meet the physical, psychosocial, nutritional and health education needs of the entire family.
The grant for the satellite center is a portion of $1.7 million from HHS to support four new community health centers in the state. The grant was recently announced by U.S. Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin.
“Community health centers provide an important safety net for the people who need it most,” Mikulski said in a news release. “This is especially important in these economically trying times when there is more need and fewer resources. These Affordable Care Act funds will help community health centers open their doors in under-served Maryland communities, making sure families have access to reliable health care in their own neighborhoods, while at the same time creating and sustaining good-paying jobs.”
“Community health centers are the backbone to providing quality health care for almost 300,000 Marylanders today. The need continues to grow,” said Cardin in the news release. “Year after year, the Affordable Care Act continues to make direct investments in expanding the reach of these essential health care providers so they can better deliver quality, accessible services to millions of new patients in communities across Maryland and nationwide.”
