— CUMBERLAND — The Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department has opened its social hall as a warming shelter for those without heat, according to the Allegany County Health Department.

The health department is urging residents to check on elderly or at-risk neighbors, family members and friends to ensure they are safe.

Because superstorm Sandy caused widespread power outages in the region, the department emphasizes that this can cause significant problems for those with medical devices or medications requiring refrigeration. If the power outage is prolonged, it can result in food spoilage in refrigerators and freezers.

The health department has provided tips for preserving medications/medical devices and food safety during a power outage.
