Wednesday fires reported near Burlington, Romney

BURLINGTON, W.Va. — No injuries were reported when fire broke out in a Parker Road residence late Wednesday afternoon, according to the Mineral County 911 center.

The incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m., prompting Burlington, New Creek, Fountain, Patterson Creek, Springfield, Keyser, Petersburg and Maysville volunteer fire units to the scene. Tri-Towns Ambulance was placed on standby.

Efforts to contact the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department for details were unsuccessful.

Unconfirmed reports indicated the residence was heavily damaged, if not destroyed.

The American Red Cross was contacted to provide emergency assistance to the victims.

In Hampshire County, six people and several dogs and cats escaped fire that occurred in their residence on Core Road off U.S. Route 50 shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to Romney Deputy Chief Norman Simpkins.

“They all got out safely. Everything went well,” said Simpkins.

The flue fire spread into the walls before it destroyed the second floor of the two-story dwelling, he said.
