Maryland man dies in Hampshire cliff fall

ROMNEY, W.Va. — A Woodbine, Md., man was fatally injured when he fell from a cliff along Camp Cliffside Road near Springfield early Sunday, according to the Hampshire County 911 center.

William J. Raines, 26, died in the incident that occurred at about 4 a.m., prompting response of Springfield fire and EMS volunteers and the Maryland State Police medevac helicopter.

Senior Deputy Shandon Watts was dispatched and arrived at the scene at 4:40 a.m. and was able to locate Raines on a cliff about 80 feet from the top of the cliff. Watts said that Raines was able to communicate with him and stated that he “had fallen.”

Raines died at the scene at 6:45 a.m., police said.

Witnesses told police that they were making a fire and that Raines had gone to gather wood when they heard him fall.

Police said no foul play is suspected.

Romney and Levels volunteer firefighters also responded to the scene.
