Sex offender alert posted after Northeast incident

CUMBERLAND — Authorities were looking for a known sex offender who was reportedly taking pictures of students at the Northeast Elementary School playground Wednesday.

The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident with assistance of Maryland State Police, Cumberland Police and the C3I Unit.

The incident prompted a statement issued by the Allegany County Board of Education Thursday afternoon.

“Yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, November 14, 2012, a vehicle was observed by a parent at Northeast Elementary School. Inside the vehicle, a male appeared to be taking photographs of students on the playground.

“The parent immediately notified school personnel and was able to give them a physical description of the man, a description of the vehicle, and the vehicle’s license plate number. School and system administrators notified law enforcement, who determined that the vehicle observed is owned by a registered sex offender.

“As a precaution, Northeast notified parents of the incident via School Messenger and asked that they be extra vigilant in their care of children. School officials continue to work with law enforcement to assess any potential threats.

A Northeast school parent said she received a voice mail message Wed-nesday at about 4:40 p.m. from a school official advising of the incident and urging parents to take precautions.
