Downtown event raises money for child abuse prevention

CUMBERLAND — Ray Welsh’s 20th annual Cumberland Car Show and C.A.R.e. Benefit will be held at the Windsor Castle Events Centre, 210 S. Centre St., on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to raise money for child abuse prevention.

The event is open to the public and admission to activities in the building is free. The vehicles will be parked near the structure, which formerly served as an armory.

Sponsors are the Early Editions Car Club, Classy Chassis Car Club, Roy Rogers Family Restaurant, WFRB and GO 106 radio stations, and Windsor Castle.

C.A.R.e. stands for Cumberland Area Racers for the education of child abuse prevention. This group was started by Charlene Bovey, who wanted to do something to help protect children in our community.

Funds raised from the benefit will go toward services in Allegany County provided by the Child Abuse Task Force. The Child Abuse Task Force is a nonprofit organization and the C.A.R.e. group is registered as a charity organization in Maryland.

Featured at the April 28 event will be race cars, as well as classic and antique cars from the Early Edition Car Club and Classy Chassis Car Club. Entertainment will include dancers from the Dixon Dance Studio and Teal Steel will also perform.

In addition, there will be face painting for the kids, a variety of vendors selling their wares, food provided by Wamba Caravan 89, Order of Alhambra, as well as an auction featuring items from local businesses.
