Times-News graphic designer wins first place editorial contest award

CUMBERLAND — Times-News graphic artist Shannon Burnside won first place for Best Feature Page Design in the 2013 Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association Editorial Awards Contest.

Burnside earned the recognition for her Health and Fitness 2012 cover.

The judges’ remarks said, “Sharp-looking cover with great use of typography.”

A full-time employee in the Graphics Department, Burnside has worked at the Times-News for 13 years, including her previous part-time position.

She attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

Burnside competed in the division of daily newspapers with circulation under 30,000 copies.

The MDDC Press honored the best entries for 2012 at a recent luncheon held at the Four Points by Sheraton—BWI near Baltimore.

The editorial contest acknowledges excellence for print and online categories that include continuing coverage, investigative reporting, public service, medicine and science, religion and arts and also recognizes superior page design, blogs, photography and informational graphics.
