— CRESAPTOWN — Two Western Correctional Institution correctional officers went to the hospital Thursday night after an assault by a mental health inmate at the prison, according to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

Shortly after 7 p.m., the inmate in a housing unit struck a male officer in the face. That 16-year veteran officer suffered facial and arm injuries.

A female officer who responded to the incident went to the hospital as a result of exposure to pepper spray.

Both officers were treated and released from the hospital and one planned to return to work Friday, according to a department spokesman.

The 32-year-old inmate has been charged with first-degree assault and assaulting a correctional officer. He has been placed in special observation housing. He is serving a 5 1/2-year sentence for assault and weapons charges.

The department’s Internal Investigative Unit was notified.
