CUMBERLAND — Maryland State Police Superintendent Col. Marcus Brown recently announced the appointment of Lt. H.B. Martz as the commander of the Cumberland barrack.
Martz joined the Maryland State Police in 1997 and was assigned to the Rockville barrack after graduation from the academy.
He was transferred to the Aviation Command in 1998 and was assigned as a trooper/flight paramedic at “Trooper 2” outside of Washington and then later to “Trooper 5” in Cumberland.
During his assignment with the Aviation Command, Martz served as the helicopter section supervisor at Cumberland as well as the Command’s Training Section coordinator in Baltimore.
Prior to his promotion and assignment to the Cumberland barrack, Martz was transferred back to field operations in 2010 and has held the positions of detective sergeant and first sergeant at the Cumberland barrack.
Most recently, Martz was assigned as the barrack commander at the Rockville barrack in Montgomery County after being promoted to lieutenant in January.
“I’m extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to command the Cumberland barrack and to be back serving the citizens of Allegany County.
“We have an excellent group of highly trained and dedicated troopers at Cumberland who are committed to reducing crime and promoting highway safety,” he said.
“I’m eager to continue the great partnership between the Maryland State Police and the sheriff’s department as well as the other allied law enforcement agencies in the county who all work very hard every day to keep our communities safe,” Martz said.
Martz encourages citizens to be engaged in their communities and their schools and asks residents to call police when they see anything that doesn’t seem right. Emergency calls for service should always be made by dialing 911; the Maryland State Police at Cumberland can be reached directly by calling 301-729-2101.

Martz is a 1980 graduate of Mount Savage High School and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He resides here in Allegany County.
