Pa. murder suspect will be extradited

Cumberland man faces charges in Centerville slaying

BEDFORD, Pa. — A Bedford prosecutor plans to extradite a Cumberland man on charges he fatally shot a male friend of the suspect’s ex-wife.

Bedford County District Attorney William Higgins and Pennsylvania State Police are not commenting on a motive in the shooting of 49-year-old Michael Simpson, who was found dead Sunday night by his 40-year-old girlfriend.

Authorities said that woman is the ex-wife of 44-year-old Mark Shirey of Cumberland. The couple had four children together, but divorced about 10 years ago.

Shirey either broke into Simpson’s house on Centerville Road or followed him inside through an attached garage and allegedly killed Simpson with a shotgun blast, authorities believe.

Higgins said it could take up to three months to bring Shirey to Pennsylvania to face homicide and other charges. Online court records do not list an attorney for Shirey.

Shirey remained jailed Friday in the Allegany County Detention Center on a detainer from Bedford County. He was arrested Tuesday night on Lower Town Creek Road near Oldtown by the C3I Unit, Pennsylvania State Police and U.S. marshals on a warrant from Allegany County in a vehicle theft case.

Shirey was questioned by Pennsylvania State Police and C3I investigators along with two other men following the arrest. The two unidentified men were released and were said to be witnesses who provided information relating to the incident.
