Two charged with Midland convenience store burglary

CUMBERLAND — A Gilmore man and a Frostburg man have been arrested in connection with the early Sunday burglary of the Pick-and-Go convenience store on state Route 36 at Midland, according to the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.

A window of the businesses was smashed to gain entry at about 12:05 a.m.

Thieves removed 45 cartons of cigarettes and money from a cash register. The loss was estimated at nearly $3,000.

Detective Kraig Simpson of the sheriff’s office, lead investigator in the case, was assisted by the C3I Unit in the investigation that led to the arrest of 20-year-old Shawn B. Spiker of Gilmore and 33-year-old Nicholas J. Griffith of Frostburg.

Spiker was jailed Tuesday on a probation violation and a warrant has been obtained to charge him with second-degree burglary, malicious destruction of property and felony theft. He remained jailed Thursday at the Allegany County Detention Center without bond.

Griffith was arrested Wednesday after a search warrant was executed at his Center Street residence.

Jailed on burglary, felony theft and malicious destruction of property charges, Griffith remained at the Allegany County Detention Center on Thursday on $15,000 bond.

Police said evidence related to the burglary was found when both men were arrested.

Investigators also  found controlled dangerous substances and paraphernalia and charges are pending on those offenses.

Lt. Randy Cutter of the sheriff’s office said information provided by residents factored in the investigation.
