From Staff Reports
OAKLAND — The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office has identified the victim of Friday’s fire on Horseshoe Lane as 37-year-old Roger R. Reckart of Oakland.
Reckart’s body was located inside the burned remains of his 16-foot camper trailer located at 10 Horseshoe Lane in Oakland at about 6 p.m.
A preliminary report by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner revealed the cause of Reckart’s death to be the result of thermal burn injuries received during the blaze.
Reckart was the sole occupant of the trailer at the time of the fire.
The fire marshal’s office said the fire was accidental and caused by combustibles located too closely to a portable kerosene heater.
Twenty-five firefighters from Oakland Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze just before 6 p.m. after a neighbor observed the trailer on fire. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the victim’s body.
Investigators determined no working smoking alarms were present during the on-scene investigation.
Property damages were estimated at $1,500.
The Garrett County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation.
