Mountain Ridge Jazz Orchestra earns gold medal at festival

FROSTBURG — The Mountain Ridge Jazz Orchestra earned a gold medal for its recent performance at the annual Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival in Rockville. The orchestra is under the direction of David Kauffman.

The 2013 Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival High School Big Band Competition included 12 high school jazz bands from schools located throughout the region, including North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and beyond.

Band directors selected jazz-oriented compositions to perform. Following the performance, one of the festival clinicians conducted a private clinic to provide immediate feedback.

The Mountain Ridge Jazz Orchestra has participated in a number of jazz festivals throughout the region and has been recognized for excellence in each festival.

The band will perform at the Essentially Ellington Regional Festival at Temple University in Philadelphia on March 13 and at the highly acclaimed Chantilly Jazz Festival in Northern Virginia on March 23.
