ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Cody Miller scored on an eight-yard touchdown run with 7:48 to play, lifting No. 19 St. John Fisher over Frostburg State 38-35 in a back-and-forth Empire 8 opening game for both Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (1-3, 0-1) rallied from an 11-point deficit with two quick fourth-quarter touchdowns to take a 35-31 lead. Trailing 31-20, Antonio Wood caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Ken Emmons with 12:32 to play, capping a nine-play, 17-yard drive.
After a turnover, the Bobcats took their second lead of the game at 35-31 on Mike Fourth’s six-yard run and Jake Armstrong’s fifth extra point.
St. John Fisher (4-0, 1-0) traveled 41 yards in seven plays on its game-winning drive.
Frostburg State’s last drive stalled on its own 42 where it turned the ball over on downs with 2:19 to play and the Cardinal ran out the clock.
The Cardinal led 14-13 after the first quarter, 17-13 at halftime and was up 31-20 going into the fourth. There were four lead changes and the teams combined for 802 yards of offense.
Miller led St. John Fisher with 95 yards rushing on 23 carries and scored three touchdowns on runs of 1, 11 and 8 yards. Quarterback Tyler Fenti threw for 161 yards on 17 of 27 attempts. He also ran for a score.
Frostburg State’s Emmons threw for 283 yards, hitting 22 completions on 49 attempts with one touchdown and three interceptions. He was also the game’s leading rusher with 104 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. Fourth finished with 66 yards on 14 attempts.
The Bobcats outgained the Cardinal, 453-349, and had seven more first downs, 28-21 but committed four turnovers to two for St. John Fisher.
Defensively, Marcus Moody made a game-high 14 tackles, Rowan Pinkett added 11 tackles and Keith Smith posted 10.
Frostburg State hosts Utica on Saturday at 1 p.m.
