Oakland taking part in Patriot Golf Day

OAKLAND — Oakland Golf Club will participate in the second Patriot Golf Day, a joint initiative of The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association. Golfers across the country and at Oakland Golf Club will be asked to donate $1 to the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides educational scholarships to families of those who have become disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty.

Oakland Golf Club will request an additional $1 for each green fee that is processed Aug. 29-Sept. 1.

Patriot Golf Day has been the inspiration by PGA Professional and USGA member, Maj. Dan Rooney, of Broken Arrow, Okla. Rooney will once again lead Patriot Day golf in 2008 before he reports for his third tour of duty in Iraq as an F-16 pilot the 125th Fighter Squadron of the Oklahoma Air National Guard.

The inaugural Patriot Day Golf last year on Sept. 1 resulted in donations of more than $1.1 million to support the families of military service members who have been disabled or lost their lives injured or perished in the line of duty. Contributions were received from more than 3,200 golf facilities and approximately 200 scholarships have already been awarded due to efforts of the PGA Professionals nationwide hosting 2007 Patriot Day Golf.
