Potomac State rebounds, wins two tournaments

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

KEYSER, W.Va. — The Potomac State College golf team rebounded from a pair of losses, including its first against a junior college program, by winning a pair of tournaments and flirting with the low score school record last weekend.

On Friday, all five Catamounts posted scores in the 70s in a runaway win at the Norvelt Golf Club. The team score of 294 was just two strokes shy of the school record set in 2003.

Brendan Dillon and Matt Pellillo shot even par, and Paul Anderson and Brian Affleck shot 75 as the Catamounts won by a 42 strokes.

On Saturday at South Park, the Cats flirted with the school record again, posting a season best 293. Leading the way was Dillon with a 1-under par 71, Affleck with 72, and Stephen Bennett with a 74.

The previous week, the Catamounts split their teams, with one playing at the Rutgers University Invitational, and the other against Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference teams at South Park.

Potomac State placed 18th at Rutgers, and suffered its first NJCAA loss at South Park.

Dillon led the team at rainy Rutgers with scores of 75 and 70. Anderson was the low man at South Park with a 74. Potomac State posted a solid 308 team score, but lost to CCAC North by one stroke.

The Catamounts, 35-1 against JUCO teams and 49-20-1 overall, will play again on Oct. 4, at the South Park Golf Course, in a tune-up for the upcoming WPCC Championships. The Catamounts are two-time defending conference champions.
