APOLLO, Pa. — The Potomac State college golf team won its third straight Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (WPCC) Championship on Tuesday at The Links at Spring Church. The team finished conference play last weekend and headed into the Conference tournament with a 37-1 record in NJCAA play and a 36-1 conference record.
The Catamounts took home the overall victory by shooting a 317, and landing all of their players on the all-tournament team for the event. In second place was Butler County Community College with a 331 and CCAC North fired a 349 for third.
The Catamounts were led by freshman Luke Dempsey, who shot a 76 and took home individual conference championship honors. The tough course saw very few low scores and yielded only three scores in the 70s.
The Catamount charge was followed by Brendan Dillon with a 79, Paul Anderson with an 80, Matt Pellillo with an 82, and 83s from Stephen Bennett and Brian Affleck. All six Catamounts were named to the all-tournament team by placing in the top 10.
Also, the WPCC awarded honors to all-conference team members and the Catamounts placed five golfers on this team for their overall performance during the year. Brian Affleck, Brendan Dillon, Paul Anderson, Mike Stenger, and Robbie Williams were named to this team, and were among of the top-10 point-getters over the course of the year.
“The team had a successful year in conference play and at the tournament,” said coach Aaron Edwards. “Luke really stepped up and played well. It was a tough day at the Links, but he posted a solid score and took home medalist honors.
“I doubt anyone would have believed that neither a 317 nor a 76 would have won this event, but it just shows you how much golf is a game of unknowns. We posted what may have been our highest score of the year, but on the tough course, it was enough, and we moved on to the state tournament. I think we will all see the Catamount team we have all come to expect, and at the PCAA State tournament we will hopefully show what we can really do.”
The Catamounts were recently given a fifth-place ranking by Golfstat, and take that ranking to the Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association (PCAA) State Tournament held at Penn National Golf Club. The PCAA State Tournament features the top 26 golfers from the WPCC as well as the top 26 golfers from the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (EPCC). The Catamounts are the defending PCAA state champions and look to defend that title starting Monday.
