FSU’s Gwinn, Russell earn individual honors

FROSTBURG — Senior Stephanie Gwinn and junior Lauren Russell of the Frostburg State women’s soccer team have been honored by the College Sports Information Director’s of Amercia (CoSIDA). The Bobcat duo have been named to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II team.
The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
The pair have helped FSU to a 15-3 overall record, including the nation’s seventh highest scoring offense (4.06) and 13 shutouts on defense.
Gwinn, a NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-East Region honorable mention selection last fall, has been a four-year starter in net for the Bobcats helping the team with a 7-2 overall record and 11 saves this season. A three-time All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference selection, Gwinn has made 157 career saves with 11 shutouts and a total of 45 wins. Off the field, Gwinn is a Dean’s List student and a three-time All-AMCC Academic recipient. Gwinn is majoring in law & society and holds a 3.36 grade point average.
Russell has been an offensive force for the Bobcats this season. She is currently ranked eighth in the country in points per game (3.24), 12th in goals per game (1.294) and 23rd in assists per game (0.65). Last Saturday, she set FSU’s single-season point record and has 59 points. She is a two-time All-AMCC honoree and was selected to the NSCAA All-Region second team as a freshman two years ago. Off the field, Russell is a Dean’s List student and is a two-time All-AMCC Academic slection. Russell is majoring in exercise & sport science and carries a 3.35 grade point average.
Frostburg State, the number two seed in this year’s AMCC Tournament, hosts the seventh seeded Hilbert Hawks at Bobcat Stadium in the first round today at 4:30 p.m.
