MR beats Alco in OT, 2-1

Williamsport ends FH’s season, 1-0

FROSTBURG — Zach Saylor scored an unassisted goal with 2:08 left in the first overtime Thursday evening to send Mountain Ridge to the Maryland 1A West Region finals with a 2-1 win over Allegany on a snowy night in Frostburg.

Saylor’s goal came off of a direct kick, and bounded off of the goal into the net. It came after a long scoreless stretch that included the final 15 minutes of the first half and the entire second.

Justin Winebrenner got the first goal when Chris Ranker assisted him 6:30 deep in the half. Allegany needed almost 20 minutes to respond, but tied the score on an unassisted goal from Adam Boor.

The score was influenced by the weather conditions that consisted of rain, wind and snow.

The Miners held a 18-10 advantage in shots taken, and got seven saves from Conner Eberly. Allegany got nine saves from Ryan Marchini. Each team took six corner kicks.

“It was a great match between two evenly matched teams,” Miners Coach Tim Nightengale said. “The kids on both sides battled all the way, and we were playing in some pretty horrible weather conditions. I commend Allegany for its excellent play, and congratulate our players for persevering and play the game to its end.”

The Miners (13-2-1) will play the winner of tonight’s Fort Hill/Williamsport match on Tuesday in Frostburg.

Allegany ends its season 10-4-2.

CUMBERLAND — Fort Hill held big leads in shots taken and corner kicks, but it was a Bryan Whittmore goal midway through the second half that sent Williamsport to a win over the Sentinels in the Maryland 1A West Region Semifinals.

Fort Hill, which finishes the season 10-5-1, attempted 18 shots to seven from the Wildcats and held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. Whittmore scored his goal off of a penalty kick that came with 22:53 left in the second half.

Sentinel goalie Daniel Johnson made five saves, and Alex Aleshire had 12 in the win.

“These players really took to the team concept, and played very much like a family,” said Fort Hill Head Coach Jim Hott. “We had a lot of players that had to learn different positions, and they all did what they had to. The 12 seniors on the team have put in a great four years at Fort Hill and will be sorely missed next season. They really helped the team to gel this year and deserved better than the outcome.”
