CUMBERLAND — Five Spartans scored in double figures as second-ranked Bishop Walsh ran a balanced attack on its way to a 72-63 win over No. 1 Mountain Ridge Monday evening in Cumberland.
Kamran Khataian paced the Spartans with 19 points, while Myles Clifford and Dylan D’Atri both had 14. Clifford led the team with 11 rebounds to ensure a double-double and added four steals. D’Atri added six boards.
Kym Pierce also broke into double figures to finish with 12, and Spencer Wine ended with an even 10.
Bishop Walsh led for a majority of the evening, but the Miners were never far behind. After getting out to a 20-17 lead by the close of the first, BW stretched the lead to 38-31 at halftime. Mountain Ridge cut into that slightly to make it 47-42 at the end of the third.
“It was a battle between No. 1 and No. 2 in the area and it lived up to its billing,” said BW Head Coach Jeff Rhodes. “It was a really hard fought game and an interesting match-up. We had more size, while they had better shooters. They wouldn’t go away, but we made a few more plays than they did in the end.”
The Miners’ David Hobel led all scorers with 34 points, but no other Mountain Ridge player scored more than seven.
The junior varsity contest also went to the Spartans, 56-48.
The Spartans fell to 2-3 after a loss to Hedgesville in the Eagles Christmas Tournament. Since then Bishop Walsh has rolled off five straight victories to go to 7-3. It will play at Northern on Friday evening.
Mountain Ridge suffers its first loss and is now 6-1. It will host Allegany on Thursday.
Another Game Includes:
Broadfording 68

HAGERSTOWN — Armando Miller scored 17 points and Steven Economus scored 12 to lead Broadfording Academy to a victory over Calvary Christian Academy Monday in a non-league game at Broadfording.
A total of 13 players scored for Broadfording, which took advantage of a high number of Calvary turnovers in building a 21-6 first-quarter lead, a 39-16 halftime lead and a 56-22 lead after three quarters.
Calvary was led by Brandon Inglish and Dustin Heavner with six points apiece. Heavner had seven rebounds and three assists for Calvary.
Calvary (2-6) will host Grace Academy today at 7 p.m.
