Mountain Ridge, Southern take titles

CUMBERLAND - The Mountain Ridge boys team and the Southern girls team won the respective team championships of the Western Maryland Track and Field Championships, held Tuesday at Greenway Avenue Stadium.
The Mountain Ridge boys won with 146 points, followed by Allegany with 120, Northern with 111, Fort Hill with 88, Southern with 87 and Bishop Walsh with 2.
In the girls meet, Southern won with 156 points, while Mountain Ridge and Northern tied for second with 122 points. Fort Hill was fourth with 67, followed by Allegany with 50 and Bishop Walsh with 22.
In the boys meet, the Miners were led by Andrew Delaney, who won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:07.2, and anchored the winning 4 x 800 relay (8:47), which was started by Chris DeRosa, Chase Bonnette and Justin Winebrenner.
Randy Peay won the 100-meter dash in 11.6 seconds, while Marcus Stewart took the 200-meter dash in 44.2. Austin Peets won the discus with a throw of 138-feet, 5-inches.
Jeff Babich was the big gun for Allegany, recording three first-place finishes, taking the triple jump (39-7 1/2), the long jump (20-8 1/4) and the high jump (6-6).
For Northern, Ryan Bowser won the 1600-meter run (4:31) and the 3200-meter run (10:34.6), while Mitch Hall took the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.1.
For Fort Hill, Jeb Hardman won the 400-meter dash (54.4) and ran the second leg of the winning 4 x 400 relay, following Taylor Anderson, and preceding Jack Meekins and Charlie Olmor. Kris Steckman won the shot put at 46-4.
For Southern, Caiden Shaffer finished first in the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.1) and the pole vault (11-0). Shaffer also anchored Southern's winning 4 x 100 (46.8) and 4 x 200 (1:37.7) relay teams. Members on both winning teams were Jon Ross, Mike McConnell and Allan Gnegy.
In the girls meet, Southern was led to the championship by Samantha Taylor, who won the 100 high hurdles (17.3) and the pole vault (8-0). She was also the starter on the winning 4 x 100 relay team (54.1) and was followed by Chande Remley, Jennifer Cosner and Summer Mossman.
Southern also won the 4 x 800 relay in 10:53 with the team of Lindsey Smith, Casey Gindlesberger, Jennifer Cosner and Krista Hollingsworth.
For Mountain Ridge, Maura Jones won the 100-meter dash (13.0), the 200-meter dash (26.7) and anchored the winning 4 x 400 relay (4:25.6). The first three legs were run by Caitlyn Clark, Shylar Phillips and Jancis Durney, Maura Jones.
Courtney Jacobs won the high jump at 4-8, and Rachel Scarpelli won the discus at 93- 1/2
For Northern, Brittany Stein won the 300 hurdles and ran the first leg on the Huskies' winning 4 x 200 relay team (1:54.4). Following Stein were Chelsi Kling, Amber Kling and Adria Graham.
Kling won the long jump at 15-1 3/4.
Amanda Twigg had a big night for Fort Hill, setting school records in the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run. Twigg's mark in the 400 now stands at 59.8, while she established the school record in the 800 at 2:17.8.
Ava Guigliano won the triple jump for the Sentinels at 30-5.
For the Campers, Lauryn MacFawn won the 1600-meter run at 5:17, while Anna Dusenberry won the 3200 (12:28.1) and Leah Wormack the shot put (29-11 1/2).
