Allegany’s first five batters combined for 10 hits Friday, and the Campers glided to a 13-3 win over Clear Spring Friday in the first round of the Maryland 1A West Region playoffs.
Hayley Stankan recorded seven strikeouts in five innings, while issuing two walks and allowing five hits. The Blazers scored a run in the second and got their final two in the third.
Allegany ran out to a 6-1 lead after the end of two innings. It scored a pair of runs in the first and added four more in the second. After adding one run in the third, the Campers.
Jenna Mathews finished the day with three hits, all singles, and three runs batted in. Hilary Lyons and Erin Hansel had a double and a single each, with Hansel getting two RBIs, and Lyons one. Beth Szymanski and Haylie Harper had two singles each, and Katelyn Gear delivered a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning that blew the game open.
Clear Spring had scored twice in the third inning and had runners on first and second base when Szymanski made a sliding catch on a sinking line drive in the outfield and was able to double-up the runner on second and end the threat.
Allegany (14-5) will play at home, at 4 p.m. on Monday, against the winner of Friday’s Smithsburg/Brunswick contest.
