HAGERSTOWN - Tyler Smearman and Neal Eshleman homerd in a five-run third inning and Bishop Walsh rolled past Washington Christian, 16-4, in the first round of the Maryland Class B Private Schools State Tournament on Thursday.
The Spartans (11-12) scored five runs in the first inning and led 12-1 after three. The game was shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule.
Smearman had the biggest day at the plate for the Spartans, leading a 19-hit attack with a two-run homer, three singles and four RBIs. Eshleman blasted a three-run homer and two singles and had three RBIs. Zac Hare had three singles and four RBIs, Ray Miller and Eric Diamond doubled and singled and John Cullen stroked three singles.
Chris Stein got the win, allowing three hits and striking out five in five innings.
BW plays at St. Maria Goretti on Saturday, at noon, in the double-elimination tournament.
