Walk-off homer sinks Frostburg State

For the Cumberland Times-News

BOYERTOWN, Pa. - Sophomore Tim McMenamin hit a two-out, two-run, walk-off home run in the 10th inning to lift No. 4 seed Gwynedd-Mercy to a 5-3 win over No. 5 seed Frostburg State in the first game of the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Baseball Regional at Bear Stadium Wednesday.

FSU's season-high nine-game winning streak came to an end in the loss and the Bobcats now sit at 31-12 overall while the Griffins improve to 31-10.

The Bobcats play No.1 seed Kean (35-8) this morning.

Frostburg State trailed 3-2 heading into the ninth inning when sophomore Joe Clark led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Andrew Derr. Junior Bryan Burke then singled to center scoring Clark for the game-tying run.

In the 10th inning, Gwynedd-Mercy's Nick DiEnno drew a two-out walk and McMenamin hit his sixth home run of the season to give GMC the win.

The Griffins opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second inning.

Senior Ryan Webb put Frostburg State on the board in the top of the fourth with an opposite-field home run.

GMC pushed its lead back to two, 3-1, with a single run in the fifth. However, FSU used another solo homerun to pull to within one when junior Allen Peake hit his team-leading 11th homer of the season.

Senior Todd Holmes tossed 4.1 innings in relief suffering his first loss of the season while Ryan Reynolds earned the win for GMC after going five innings.
