Tri-State Youth Football Camp July 22-24
CUMBERLAND — The ninth annual Tri-State Area Youth Football Camp will be held July 22 and July 23 from 6 to 8 p.m., and July 24 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Allegany High School.
The camp will be presented by the Allegany High football players and coaching staff. The camp is open to all area youths entering grades K-8 during fall 2009.
The camp offers beginners an introduction to the basic fundamentals of football, and offers the experienced player an opportunity to develop and improve skills. There will be competitions and prizes nightly following the instructional stations.
All Pee Wee and CAYFL players are encouraged to attend, as well as any child wanting to “try the game” for possible participation on organized teams. No previous football experience is needed, and there is no weight/size limit.
The final pre-registration will be Wednesday, July 8, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Allegany in front of the gymnasium. The cost is $30 ($25 for siblings) and includes a camp shirt. For more information, call Jeannette DeStefano at 301-729-1241.
Lowery team gets win at Fore Sisters
RAWLINGS — The team of Ernie Lowery, Gary Wolford, Ray Metz and Mike Mathews teamed for a net 180 to win the Men’s Golf Association best three-ball tournament Wednesday at the Fore Sisters Golf Club.
Second, at 181, were Dave Stottlemyer, Junior O’Neal, Jerry Robinette and Mick Lantz.
Closest to the pins went to Wolford on No. 4, Vern Wolodkin on No. 7, O’Neal on No. 9, Gary Bradfield on No. 11, Mathews on No. 15 and Matt James on No. 18.
CAYFL meeting this evening
RIDGELEY, W.Va. — The Cumberland Area Youth Football League will hold its monthly meeting tonight, at 7:30, at the Ridgeley Legion.
All teams must be represented, and monetary fees will be collected.
Ehrmann seminar requires RSVP
CUMBERLAND — Anyone interested in attending the seminar with former Baltimore Colts lineman Joe Ehrmann is asked to make reservations due to limited seating.
Ehrmann will speak at the Central Assembly of God on Thursday, July 9 at 6 p.m. Those who wish to attend are asked to call (301) 777-3105 before Thursday with the number of people in their party. If there is no answer, leave a message including party size.
Handley team takes Maplehurst events
FROSTBURG — Lois Handley, Pat Zumpano, Pat Schisler and Irene Hughes shot a 56 to win the Sand Springs and Oscar’s Dinner awards at Maplehurst.
Margie Nelson, Ellen Arnone, Sandy Hiser and Peggy Kealy were second. The Patriotic Play-Red & Blue match play is next week.
FSU Basketball Camp July 27-31
FROSTBURG — Frostburg State University head men’s basketball coach Webb Hatch and his staff will be hosting a day camp for boys and girls ages 6-17 from July 27-31, 2009 on the FSU campus.
The camp will be both instructional and informative for all levels of players who wish to improve their skills. Campers will also have the opportunity to work with and learn from college coaches. The camp will further the players skill level to enhance his or her ability to play the game and have fun.
The 5-day camp will run from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. everyday at a coast of $75.00 per person. Campers will also have the option of having lunch provided for an additional $30.00.

Teams needed for LL World Series
WESTERNPORT — Several spots remain for the Tri-Towns Little League World Series.
The 11-12 year old tournament will begin on Tuesday, with the drawing taking place on Sunday at 2 p.m. The 9-10 year old tournament will begin July 21 with the drawing at 2 p.m. on July 19. Any interested teams should contact Alan Wilt at (301) 359-3367, or e-mail to alanwilt@verizon.net.
Ferguson trio gets Pinewacker victory
KEYSER, W.Va. — Ron Ferguson, Gordon Ward and Gordon Brubaker won the latest Pinewacker outing with a 59. Frank Shepherd, Jesse Middle, Ed Mickey and Lee Garlans were second at 60, and Jack Reynolds, Debbie Bribaker, Wayne Longenecker and Gene Chiaverini were third. William Ack (Nos. 2, 8), Curtis Clary (No. 4) and Dave Tennant.
Cole group earns win at Valley View
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Jim Cole, Russ Newman, Gene Dellinger and Bob Moore shot a 13-under par to win the Pinewackers outing at Valley View Country Club.
Mike Cost, Bob Hyson, Ron Brill, Jerry Crites and Carlton Saville tied Harold Fitzwater, Gene Lang, George Evans and Gerry Lawrence for second at 11-under. Lawrence, Cole, Jim Castro, Hyson and Bob Kemp were pin winners.
Campbell team tops at Mill Creek
BURLINGTON — The team of Tom Campbell, John Alkire, John Barger and Russ Blubaugh finished at 6-under par to win the MGA tournament Wednesday at the Mill Creek Country Club.
Second, also at 6-under, was Pot Coleman, Evan Coleman, Dave Coon and Larry Friend. Pin winners were Dave Morgan (No. 3), Zane Junior (No. 4) and Friend (No. 8).
The club championship will be played July 11-12.
TNT announcer to miss NASCAR races
ATLANTA (AP) — Play-by-play announcer Bill Weber will not call the last two races of TNT’s NASCAR coverage. Weber wasn’t in the booth for last weekend’s race from New Hampshire Motor Speedway. TNT said Wednesday that Ralph Sheheen will again take his spot, working The Coke Zero 400 in Daytona and the LifeLock.com 400 from Chicagoland.
TNT did not give a reason for Weber’s absence. In a statement Sunday about the New Hampshire race, the network said: “As this is a private issue, it’s the policy of the company not to discuss personal matters involving our employees.”
