Vickers takes pole at Chicagoland
JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — Brian Vickers has won his fifth pole of the season, running a lap of 184.162 mph at Chicagoland Speedway.
Red Bull Racing teammate Scott Speed qualified second on Thursday at 182.958. Three-time defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson was third.
Denny Hamlin and Clint Bowyer round out the top five.
Vickers hasn’t had those poles help him drive to Victory Lane. He hasn’t finished higher than fifth this season.
He has 10 career poles in 191 Cup races.
Rasheed Wallace choses Boston Celtics
WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) — Rasheed Wallace says he is a Boston Celtic because he feels the team gives him the best chance to win another championship.
The four-time All-Star, who became a free agent after last season with the Detroit Pistons, took a reported three-year contract with the Celtics. Wallace, who won a title with Detroit in 2004, said Thursday that he felt the Celtics were a good fit for him. Boston won the NBA title in 2008.
A day after signing, the 6-foot-11 Wallace sat at his introductory news conference with the team’s Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.
A starter his entire 14-year career, Wallace said he would be content coming off the bench as long as the Celtics won.
Janzen, Stiles share John Deere lead
SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — The stark reminder is right there on Lee Janzen’s cell phone, a grizzly picture that makes him wince and reminds him how far he has come.
It’s his swing.
His old swing, actually, the one that made him a non-factor.
“I think confidence is your most valuable club in your bag,” Janzen said.
He just got a big boost.
Janzen stirred some memories with a 7-under 64 that left him tied with Darron Stiles for the lead after the first round of the John Deere Classic on Thursday.
Janzen has not won on the PGA Tour since he captured his second U.S. Open in 1998, yet he’s in position after an impressive start at TPC Deere Run.
The 44-year-old was at 8 under after birdies on 16 and 17 but he had his first bogey on 18 when he hit into a bunker and missed an 8-foot par putt. He was off the course by the time Stiles made a 7-foot birdie putt on the same hole to forge the tie.
J.J. Henry, Matt Bettencourt and Dean Wilson were one stroke off the lead.
Last year’s winner Kenny Perry, who is second on the money list, opened with a 68, while U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover and Zach Johnson shot 69. It was not a good day for David Duval, who finished with a 75 and was in danger of missing the cut after a surprising three-way tie for second at the U.S. Open last month.
Haynesworth pleads no contest in Tenn.
FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) — Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth has pleaded no contest to a reckless driving charge in Tennessee and will be on probation for three months.
Court records show Haynesworth entered his plea Thursday morning in the Nashville suburb of Franklin. He’s required to perform 25 hours of community service, make a $5,000 charitable contribution and attend driving school.
The charge against the former Tennessee Titans player stems from a Dec. 13 incident in which prosecutors say Haynesworth tried to pass another driver, who crashed into a concrete median and was badly injured.
Circuit Court Judge Jeff Bivins told Haynesworth that he hopes the process has shown that no one is infallible.
