Ayers team wins senior tournament
BURLINGTON, W.Va. — Ken Ayers, John Barger, Bill Metz and Monty Edwards teamed for a 56 to win the Mill Creek senior scramble on Thursday.
Second, with a 58, was the team of Bob Lannon, Mike Lannon, Jerry Butler and Larry Friend. Third, with a 59, were Rick Schwinabart, Don Anderson, Dick Walls and Dallas Hite. Pin winners were Joe Hill on No. 2, Bob Moore on No. 4 and Bill Freeman on No. 8.
Custer foursome takes scramble
RAWLINGS — Grant Custer, Jeff Campbell, Tom Storey and Roy Deahl teamed for a net 28 to win the nine-hole MGA scramble Thursday evening at the Fore Sisters Golf Club.
Tied for second after a three-way cardoff with a 30 were Joel Knotts, John Tipping, Adam Mandell and Bob Broadwater, and Rich Parsons, Dick Horn, Matt James and Zac Barton. Pin winners were Horn on No. 4, Knotts on No. 7 and Junior O’Neal on No. 9.
On Wednesday the winners of the four-man shamble, with a net 195, were Robbie Harper, Jake Michaels, Bill Schute and Shawn Carpenter.
Hyett group tops at Polish Pines
KEYSER, W.Va. — Eric Hyett, Wayne Longenecker, Lee Garland and Charles Bartlett teamed for a 52 to get the win in Polish Pines Golf Club play on Thursday.
Second, with a 54, were Frank Shepherd, Mike Ryan, Tom Benson and Garland, and third, with a 56, were Jeff Alt, Troy York, Butch Ack and Garland.
Closest to the pins were York on No. 2, Bill Shepherd on No. 4, Ed Mickey on No. 6 and Tom Alt on No. 8.
Hansel team first in TGIF play
FROSTBURG — Ron Hansel, Joe Metz, Al Snyder and Burt Ewing shot a 55 to win in the Maplehurst Country Club TGIF League on Friday.
Second went to Larry Housel, Gary Watson, Bill Henaghan and Rick Gray. Pin winners were Allen Snyder on No. 2, Doug Layman on No. 7, Mason Diehl on No. 10 and Buzz Davis on No. 15.
CCC holds Shop Game
CUMBERLAND — Randy Kammauf had a net 61 and Butchy Blank a gross 78 for the top scores in Wednesday’s Shop Game at the Cumberland Country Club.
Second net was Greg Hare with a 65 and third net went to Mickey Robinson and Mike Mattingly at 66. In gross play, Gus Bell and Bucky Butts tied for second with 80s.
Pin winners were Steven Friend on No. 6 and Steve Harman on No. 18.
YMCA to host girls volleyball clinic
CUMBERLAND — The Riverside YMCA is offering middle school and high school girls volleyball clinics. The middle school clinic is for girls entering grades 6-8, and the high school clinic is for girls entering grades 9-12.
The clinic will offer instruction through drills and game play. First-time players as well as experienced players are encouraged to attend. Instructed by Kelly May, the program runs July 27-31 at the Riverside YMCA gym, 9:30 a.m. to noon each day. Fees are $54 for Y-members and $74 for the community. CCC holds Couples Scramble
CUMBERLAND — The teams of Mary Anne and Brian Jenkins, and Susan and Jim Scarpelli won the Cumberland Country Club’s Friday night Couples Scramble with a score of 29.
Ravens, Bennett agree to 1-year deal
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Wide receiver Drew Bennett has agreed to a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens, who are looking for help at the position in the wake of the retirement of Derrick Mason.
Bennett worked out with the Ravens on Friday and passed a physical before accepting the offer.
The 6-foot-5 Bennett played one game with St. Louis last year because of a foot injury. Over an eight-year career he has 307 catches for 4,412 yards.
Bennett’s most productive season was in 2004, when he had 80 catches for 1,247 yards and 11 touchdowns with Tennessee.
Kelly leads rain-drenched Canadian Open
OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) — Jerry Kelly shot a 7-under 65 in the completion of the first round and was 11 under overall with three holes to play in the second to top the leaderboard in the rain-delayed Canadian Open.
Camilo Villegas, Tim Herron, Martin Laird and Nathan Green were a stroke back.
The 42-year-old Kelly, the New Orleans winner in April, had seven birdies in a nine-hole stretch in the first round. In the second, he had five birdies and a bogey before play was suspended for the day at 7:29 p.m. because of lightning.
Lions trade Curry for Rams’ Harris
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have traded wide receiver Ronald Curry to the St. Louis Rams for defensive tackle Orien Harris.
The deal Friday marks the second time each player has changed teams in recent months.
Curry was signed by Detroit as a free agent in April after he was released by Oakland, where he spent his first seven NFL seasons. Harris was traded to St. Louis by Cincinnati on May 6 after appearing in 14 games for the Bengals last season, his third in the NFL.
Curry has 193 career catches and 13 touchdowns, and could start immediately for the Rams.
The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Harris has 14 career tackles since being drafted in the fourth round by Pittsburgh in 2006. He has also spent time with Cleveland, Buffalo and New Orleans.
