Volleyball: Alco edges Northern; Southern sweeps

CUMBERLAND - Allegany fell behind 2-1but fought back to win the fourth and fifth games to beat Northern in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night at Allegany.
The Campers won by scores of 25-18, 14-25, 21-25, 25-13, and 15-7.
Jenna Mathews had 25 hits, eight kills and a block for Allegany. Katie Getty finished with 17 hits and 10 kills, Elizabeth Getty 15 hits, six kills, three blocks and two assists, and Tanya Phillips a team-high 13 assists.
The Huskies were led by Danielle Brenneman with 33 sets, 13 serves, 12 assists and five aces. Hanna Sines had 13 serves, seven hits and an assist, and Nicole Opel had 15 hits, 10 serves, three kills and two assists.
Northern won the jayvee contest 2-1 with Madi Whittemore getting four aces. Kerah Umbel had eight sets, two assists and an ace.
Allegany (1-0) plays at home on Monday against Southern. Northern (0-1) will host Keyser on Saturday.
