Keyser, Ridge roll; Hampshire ends streak

MOOREFIELD, W.Va. — Keyser scored on its first five possesions, and the defense was just as impressive as the Golden Tornado collected a convincing 41-0 victory over Moorefield in its season opener Friday in Moorefield.

Preston Hartman posted monster numbers by rushing for 109 yards, and throwing for 158 more.

The Tornado got on the board first when Hartman found tight end John Purdy on a post-corner route in the end zone for a 17-yard score. Purdy added the extra point to make it 7-0.

Matt Wilmer kept the ball in Keyser’s possesion when he recoverd a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. He was rewarded for his effort just a few plays later when he made it 13-0 on a 12-yard touchdown run. Moorefield blocked the kick to keep it a 13-point lead.

It was Wilmer again on the next drive when he speed past the Moorefield cornerback and was found by Hartman for the third touchdown. Hartman scored the two-point conversion on a keeper to put the score at 21-0.

After the second WIlmer touchdown, Keyser had scored three times, while the Yellow Jackets had ran just three offensive plays.

Keyser started its next drive deep in its own territory after a personal foul set them up at the nine-yard line. After Jeremy Green got outside for a 20-yard gain, Hartman kept on a play fake and took it 70 yards for the fourth touchdown in four possesions for KHS.

Moorefield began to move the ball somewhat on its next drive, getting a first down pass from Tucker Smith. The success was short-lived, and trouble found the Yellow Jackets when Green returned their punt into Moorefield territory.

Green was the second leading rusher for Keyser, gaining 64 yards on 10 carries.

Purdy took over the quarterback duties on the drive and led the Tornado, along with the help of Green and Wilmer, down the field for another score. This time is was Chris Brown breaking the plane from eight yards out. The extra point kick from Purdy made the score 34-0 with under six minutes to play.

A Keyser turnover late in the first half led to a Moorefeild drive inside the Golden Tornado 20, but it ended with a missed field goal attempt.

Keyser had the starters back in for the first drive of the second half, and got on the board once again when Hartman hooked up with Purdy for a second touchdown. The Purdy kick lifted the score to 41-0.

Purdy gained 32 yards on his two scoring catches, and Brandon Barnett led the team with 66 yards on two catches. Matt Wilmer added two catches for 60 yards.

Due to some technical diffuculty with the game clock at Moorefield, and after a short delay, time was kept on the field by the officials.

Keyser (1-0) hosts Fort Hill Friday at Stayman Field. Moorefield (0-2) stays home to play Boonsboro on Friday.
