CUMBERLAND — Allegany welcomed back Coach Tom Preaskorn by disposing of the Southern Rams, 52-8, Saturday night in the season-opener for both teams at Greenway Avenue Stadium.
Allegany junior fullback J.D. Hook led the Allegany attack with 80 yards rushing and three touchdowns on six carries, while junior halfback Dustin Wharton rushed for 68 yards on six carries, scoring two touchdowns.
Sophomore quarterback Drew O’Neal was 4-for-5 passing for 53 yards, and hit junior Trevor Jessie for a touchdown. Senior running back Shane Kreiling scored a touchdown, while junior kicker John Carpenter was 5-for-5 on extra points, kicked a 27-yard field goal, and put his final five kickoffs into the Southern end zone.
On the opening possession of the game, Allegany’s defense forced Southern into an intentional grounding, pushing the Rams back to their three before they punted out to the 24.
On the first Allegany offensive play of the season, quarterback O’Neal kept the ball for 21 yards, before handing off to Hook for the three-yard touchdown run at 9:52 of the first quarter. John Carpenter’s kick made it 7-0.
The Camper defense stuffed Southern again before Jessie turned in a 33-yard punt return to the Southern one. On second-and-goal from the seven, O’Neal sent a pass that would be tipped into the hands of Jessie for the touchdown at 7:15, with Carpenter’s kick making it 14-0.
After another three-and-out, Southern punted again, and Allegany took over at the Rams’ 49, from where it worked between two penalties on seven plays to return to the end zone. On fourth-and-11 from the Southern 31, Wharton hit the sideline and sprinted straight to the end zone for the score. A bad snap on the conversion resulted in Jessie being tackled on the failed attempt, and at 1:40, Alco led, 20-0.
The Campers got the ball back at their 34 and went the distance on four plays, receiving a big break when guard Garrett Livengood recovered a Hook fumble in the Southern secondary for a gain of six. On the next play, Hook went through a huge hole on the right side and went 43 yards untouched for the touchdown. Carpenter’s kick at 10:10 made it 27-0.
On Allegany’s next possession, it took just four plays to travel 48 yards as O’Neal hit Kane for 14 yards, gave it to Wharton on a sweep for four, and then hit Kane again across the middle for 16. From the 14, Wharton took it in for the touchdown, then ran in the two-point conversion at 6:59 of the second quarter to make it 35-0.
After an eight-yard punt, Allegany took over again at the Southern 25. Collette picked up 19 on first down, and Shane Kreiling took it into the end zone three plays later at 2:20, with Carpenter’s kicking making it 42-0.
After Alco’s Luke Messick recovered a Southern fumble, Carpenter kicked a 27-yard field goal with 13 seconds left to make it 45-0 at the half.
Allegany had 228 yards in the first half compared to four for Southern. The deepest field position Southern had was its own 32.
To open the second half, Jessie returned the kickoff 29 yards to the Allegany 48, from where Sean Collette picked up 23 to set up Hook’s 28-yard touchdown run up the gut with 10:16 showing on the running clock. Carpenter’s kick made it 52-0.
The Rams countered with a 16-play, 80-yard scoring drive, mixing up their running backs, and being led on the drive by junior halfback Tyler Sanders, who picked up 37 yards on six carries, including the Rams’ first first down of the game at 5:10 of the third quarter. With 8:00 left in the game, quarterback Ryan Sweitzer found tight end Bryson Knox for the nine-yard touchdown pass. Sweitzer’s run for two put the final at 52-8.
Allegany will host North Hagerstown on Friday, while Southern visits Boonsboro.
