Miners blank Bishop Walsh

FROSTBURG — Justin Winebrenner scored in the first half, Chris Ranker scored in the second and the defense registered its third shutout of the season as Mountain Ridge defeated Bishop Walsh, 2-0, in an Appalachian Mountain Athletic Conference game Monday evening.

Winebrenner scored on an assist from Zach Saylor with 17:08 left in the first half. It remained a 1-0 game until Ranker scored, unassisted, with just under 10 minutes left in the second.

Mountain Ridge (3-1-1, 2-1 AMAC) led in shots 19-8 and both teams had three corner kicks. Connor Eberly had four saves in goal for the Miners and Brandon Kimble had nine for the Spartans (6-2, 4-2).

Mountain Ridge won the jayvee match 4-1 with goals by Tyler Weimer, Tyler Valentine, Matt Beeman and Nathan Haberlein. John Thompson scored for Bishop Walsh.

BW plays again Thursday at Calvary Christian. Mountain Ridge will play at Northern on Tuesday, at 7:30, in a change from the original schedule. The Oct. 6 game against Northern will now be at Mountain Ridge.

Hampshire 3 Keyser 2

ROMNEY, W.Va. — Jacob Strawn scored on an assist from Jesse Johnson at the 50-minute mark to score what would prove to be the winning goal as Hampshire won its first match of the season.

Isaac Pancake gave Hampshire a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal at 3:00. Johnson followed at 13:00 with a goal assisted by Pancake to make it 2-0. Keyser’s Dylan Twigg made it 2-1 at the half on an unassisted goal at 37:00.

After Strawn’s goal made it 3-1, Hampshire, Keyser’s Jack Tasker scored on a penalty kick at 63:00 to put the final at 3-2.

Hampshire outshot Keyser 24-7 while Keyser led 3-2 in corner kicks. In the goal, Jonathan Hotchkiss had seven saves for Hampshire, and Corbin White had 13.

Keyser (3-2) will visit Fort Hill on Thursday. Hampshire (1-6-1) will play Wednesday at Washington.

On Saturday, Hampshire lost to Jefferson 4-0.

Dylan Fox scored three of the four goals for the Cougars. Ryan Sharp had the other.

Jefferson outshot Hampshire, 14-6. Both teams had three corner kicks.

The Trojans’ Jonathan Hotchkiss made nine saves. Josh Griffin had three stops for the Cougars.

Hampshire (0-6-1) hosted Keyser Monday evening.
