O’Neal passes Alco over Hampshire

ROMNEY, W.Va. — Sophomore signal caller Drew O’Neal easily had the best night of his young varsity career when he tossed four touchdown passes to lead Allegany to a 55-14 win over Hampshire Friday.

O’Neal had 200 yards on eight completions to go with the four TD tosses, and even had a fumble recovery on the defensive side.

Early on Hampshire’s initial drive a Trojan got loose in the secondary and caught a long pass down the sideline for 43 yards, but a series of fumbles put the ball down inside the Allegany 20-yard line where the Campers recovered.

Allegany relied on the pass to march down the field fairly quickly, getting two completions from O’Neal to Ryan Kane, to set up a 24-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Wharton. The drive lasted eight plays and covered 82 yards.

Wharton would reach the end zone again 1:05 into the second quarter on a 34-yard run.

After an ugly second series for the Campers that ended in a punt, Hampshire was also stopped after three plays. The Trojans, however, were awarded a first down when Allegany was called for roughing the passer on a fake punt.

Hampshire was unable to cash-in on the break, and fumbled the ball back to the Campers. Allegany then scored three plays later when O’Neal threw a 36-yard pass over the middle to running back Sean Collette for a touchdown.

With just under four minutes left before halftime, O’Neal found Collete again, this time wide open in the end zone, for a 14-yard strike to make it 28-0.

That score was stretched to 35-0 when Garrett Livengood broke through the line and blocked a punt, scooped it up and returned it 43 yards into the end zone just seconds before halftime.

The second half began just like the first for the Campers with O’Neal getting his fourth touchdown pass when he found Ryan Kane for a 34-yard score.

The Trojans took the zero off the scoreboard at 7:17 of the third quarter with a 30-yard pass from Phil Malick to Mike Clark. After Steve Wilson’s two-point run the score was 42-8. Clark led the Trojans with a total of 68 yards on four catches.

Allegany pushed the lead to 41 points on a 31-yard run by Marcellis Hamilton with 5:10 left in the third. Hamilton would lead the Campers in rushing with 75 yards. Allegany would finish with 237 rushing yards using 11 ball carriers.

John Carpenter, who kicked a school record 48-yard field goal, was 7-for-7 on extra points.

Hampshire also got its second touchdown through the air when Malick completed a 12-play drive with a 12-yard strike to Caleb Hill. Hill finished with 44 yards on four receptions.

Robbie Skinner and Blake Saville had interceptions for the Trojans.

Aaron Leasure had a 35-yard run down to the Hampshire three-yard line before he scored with a three-yard TD.

The Campers (5-1) will travel to play first-year school Washington on Friday. Hampshire (1-5) also heads east to play Musselman on Friday.
