Ridge beats Smithsburg, 3-0

FROSTBURG — Joao Toulson scored a goal and assisted on another to lead top-seeded Mountain Ridge over Smithsburg 3-0 Tuesday night in the Maryland Class 1A West Region quarterfinals at Mountain Ridge High School.

The Miners (12-2-1) advance to the semifinals where they will host Allegany Thursday night beginning at 8:30 p.m.

All of the scoring occurred in the second half. Toulson started it off of an assist from Jacob Bittner with 17:03 to play.

Josh Pritts took Zach Saylor’s feed and scored on a header with 11:24 to play and Chris Ranker sealed it at 3:04 scoring on Toulson’s assist.

The Miners dominated in both shots on goal, 20-5, and corner kicks, 11-0.

Connor Eberly made three stops for Mountain Ridge and Smithsburg’s Dan Hallman made eight saves.



Allegany 3

Northern 1

CUMBERLAND — Sam Hofacker scored two second half goals, with the first breaking a 1-1 tie, to lead Allegany over Northern in the Maryland Class 1A West quarterfinals Tuesday evening at Greenway Avenue Stadium.

The Campers led 1-0 at halftime on Nathan George’s goal assisted by Adam Boor with 20:07 remaining. Boor finished with two assists.

Early in the second half, Northern tied it on Cooper Corley’s unassisted goal at the 34:45 mark.

Hofacker broke the tie six minutes later at 28:40 on Boor’s second assist.

“Boor delivered a beautiful shot to the back of the cross and Sam headed it to the back of the net,” said Allegany head coach Rick Zimmerman.

Hofacker sealed the victory with an unassisted goal with 4:19 to play.

“Northern played a good game with class and our midfielders played an outstanding game.”

Allegany outshot Northern, 13-8. Northern had two corner kicks to Alco’s one.

Justin Shaw made six saves for Northern and Allegany’s Ryan Marchini stopped four.

Allegany (10-3-2) will play Mountain Ridge Thursday. Northern finishes 8-5-1.



Fort Hill 9

Boonsboro 4

CUMBERLAND — Andrew Amoruso had two goals and an assist in the first half and Mike Moyer had three goals in the second as third-seeded Fort Hill scored a season-high nine goals in routing Boonsboro in their Class 1A West quarterfinal at Greenway Avenue Stadium.

Fort Hill (10-4-1) will play Williamsport, which beat Clear Spring 1-0 in double overtime, in the semifinal round. The game will be at Greenway Avenue Stadium, and is tentatively set for Friday at 7 p.m.

Derrick Parker had two goals, Josh Borland a goal and three assists and Derek Deshaies a goal in Fort Hill’s offensive explosion.

Goalie Daniel Johnson, sidelined by an injury during a game at BW on Oct. 9, returned and made eight saves and did not allow a goal during his time in the net for the Sentinels.

Boonsboro (0-14) actually led 4-3 at halftime, but the Sentinels dominated the final 40 minutes and scored six unanswered goals.

Micaiah Jessie scored three goals for the Warriors.

The Sentinels scored three times in a span of only 2:50 in the second half to take control.

Moyer tied it, 4-4, with an unassisted goal at the 31:54 mark, and Parker put the Sentinels on top to stay by scoring on an assist from Borland 1:20 later. Borland made it 6-4 with a goal off a pass from Moyer at 29:04.

Parker and Moyer had unassisted goals just 19 seconds apart later in the half to make it 8-4. Moyer got the final goal and his hat trick by scoring on another Borland assist with 14:35 to go.

Fort Hill led in shots 24-15 and in corner kicks 4-2. Paul Jordan had 12 saves in goal for Boonsboro. James Johnson had four for Fort Hill.
