FROSTBURG — Mountain Ridge and goalie Heather Shipe set area records while Stephanie Fazenbaker scored two goals in leading the top-ranked and undefeated Miners to a 5-0 win over Southern Thursday in Maryland 1A West Region Soccer semifinals.
Shipe recorded her 11th shutout of the season to break the record of 10 shared by Allegany’s Lindsey Twigg (2004) and Kacey Kahl of Beall (2003). Now 16-0, Mountain Ridge ties the record for consecutive wins with Bishop Walsh, who won 16 in a row from 2002-2003. It also broke its own area record of consecutive wins in a season, set last year at 15.
After a scoreless first half, Fazenbaker accounted for the first goal with Kayla Williams assisting. Lauren Filer then scored the second goal less than a minute later when she was assisted by Kristin Knotts. The score jumped to 3-0 when Amber Ravenscroft was assisted by Quincy Hegeman, and became 4-0 when Fazenbaker was assisted by Ravenscroft. Shyler Philips tacked on the final goal when Hegeman got her second assist.
“The girls have worked extremely hard all season to be where they’re at,” said Head Coach Martha Mauzy. “They are very unselfish, and aren’t worried about who puts the ball in the goal. As for Heather, she’s just been outstanding all year for us. There’s no way we’d be where we are without her.”
The Miners finished with 16 shots to the Rams’ four. Shipe made three saves in the win, while Vicki Stevens made nine saves for Southern.
The Miners will play Boonsboro, which beat Northern 2-1, on Tuesday.

ACCIDENT — Emily Horst scored an unassisted goal in the second half to send Boonsboro to a 2-1 win over hosting Northern in the semifinals of the Maryland 1A West Region playoffs.
The Warriors and the Huskies each scored one goal in the first half with Boonsboro taking the early lead on a Jaclyn Fiola goal.
The Huskies came back to tie the score when Kaitlynn Fratz unassisted with 14:40 left in the first half. Horst scored in the second half to put Boonsboro ahead with 8:37 left in regulation.
In a defensive struggle, the teams combined for a total of eight shots. Boonsboro attempted five, while the Huskies had three. Brittany Mallow had made three goals for Northern, while Becky Smith had two for the Warriors.
“We had a great year, and these girls have everything to be proud of,” said Northern coach Jeff Graham. “I am pleased with the effort these girls put forth all year, and we had a great record to go with over 100 goals.”
The Huskies finish the season at 13-3.
Boonsboro will move on to play at Mountain Ridge on Tuesday in the region finals.
