HANCOCK — Trey Walters and Quincy Redmon scored three touchdowns each, and Bishop Walsh finished with its second consecutive winning season after beating Hancock 48-22 Friday evening.
Walters scored all three of his touchdowns in the first quarter, while Redmon scored one in the second quarter and two more in the third. Walters finished with 115 rushing yards, and added an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. In all, the Spartans rushed for over 250 yards and had 20 total first downs.
Bishop Walsh got set up in prime real estate for its first drive. The Panthers were pinned deep in their own territory on their first drive, and got off a short punt that gave the Spartans good starting position.
Using some different formations and new pages of the playbook, Bishop Walsh moved the ball right away. A holding penalty negated a Spartans touchdown once the team got near the goal line, but Walters saved them by taking in a 12-yard score on the next play.
The ensuing kickoff was almost recovered by the Spartans, and they would wind up with the ball a couple plays later when pressure on Hancock quarterback Garrett Wiles caused a costly interception to BW’s Mickey Burkett. Walters returned to the end zone on the next play for a 23-yard touchdown.
Hancock found something to the outside on its following drive, and was able to move the ball against the Bishop Walsh defense. Wiles finished off the drive with a 5-yard run, and converted the extra point on a pass to Eli Souders to make it 14-8.
Before the Panther fans stopped cheering Walters silenced them by taking the following kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown and his third score of the first quarter.
After some back and forth possessions, Jason Hartman came up with the second interception of Wiles with just under 2:00 to play before halftime. Greg Hendershot moved the Spartans into scoring position with Hartman getting BW down to the 3-yard line with one reception, and Redmon finished the drive by going up over the defender for six points on the next and a 27-8 halftime lead.
Walters almost struck again at the beginning of the second half when he returned the kickoff for a long touchdown, but penalties called on both teams resulted in the ball being kicked again. It was the third time Walters had a touchdown called back by penalty.
Redmon got the Spartans the six points anyway just two plays later on a 63-yard run. After he converted the extra point the score stood at 34-8.
A quick Hancock possession set the Spartans up at the Hancock 38. Hendershot found Redmon for 21 yards on first down, and then again for 17 yards on the next play for another touchdown that gave BW a 41-8 advantage.
A James Comier interception helped set up the final touchdown for the Spartans. Jamie Nolan was responsible for the final points with a four-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.
Bishop Walsh finishes 6-4 after tying a school record of nine wins in 10 games last season.
