Coaches course being offered at ACM Jan. 31

For the Cumberland Times-News
Cumberland Times-News

CUMBERLAND — Youth sports coaches have a golden opportunity for professional training that matches their personal interest in a Saturday, Jan. 31, course planned by Allegany College of Maryland and funded by The Community Trust Foundation.

The Course for Coaches features four presenters who are on top of their game in various aspects of youth athletics, ranging from organizational practices and interpersonal relations to physical injuries and skills-building.

This five-hour, morning session will benefit youth sports coaches in whatever sport and regardless of experience level for the ultimate gain of their teams and members.

The four components of the course, and their presenters, are:

Organizing Practices for Efficiency and Effectiveness, by veteran physical education instructor and YMCA sport camps manager Olin Perkins;

Working With Difficult People and Positive vs. Negative Feedback, by Gary Durr, who retired in mid-2008 as ACM’s vice president of continuing education and community services;

Overuse Injury Prevention and Traumatic Injury Evaluation and Treatment, by physical therapist and Progressive Physical Therapy co-owner Bucky Whiteman, MBA;

Working to Improve Every Member of the Team, by J.R. Perdew, a pitching coach in the Chicago White Sox organization.

The Course for Coaches meets from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in ACM’s Center for Continuing Education. In addition to top-notch instruction, the course includes a continental breakfast, catered lunch and an appreciation gift for coaches.

Because of ACM’s partnership with The Community Trust Foundation, a public charity that seeks to fulfill community needs, tuition is free; participants pay only a modest ($4) registration fee.

The deadline to sign up is Jan. 23. Registration is limited to those who are currently coaching or assisting in the operation of a youth sports team, or those who are scheduled to do so in 2009.

For more information contact ACM’s Institute for Professional Development and Extended Learning, a unit of the college’s Center for Continuing Education, at 301-784-5121. To register call (301) 784-5341.
