Johnson,Harness head All-City squad
CUMBERLAND — Fort Hill’s Daniel Johnson, who led the league in save percentage and shutouts, and scoring champion Brendan Harness head this year’s All-City boys soccer team.
Harness, who won the scoring title on the strength of a three-goal game against Bishop Walsh, Allegany’s Dan Levitas and Luke Tompkins, and Bishop Walsh’s Eric Diamond were also voted to the All-Area team (see separate story).
Johnson, Ryan Shiffour, Dylan Brown and Derrick Parker of Fort Hill; Adam Boor, Collin Sainz and Alex Shin of Allegany; and Dylan Dunn of Bishop Walsh round out the All-City team.
Fort Hill won this year’s City Tournament. Fort Hill and Allegany were City League co-champions with 3-1 records.
Johnson, a junior in his first season as a varsity goalkeeper, allowed just four goals in the four league games. He turned in some of his top performances of the season in the City games. He had 38 saves and led the league in save percentage at .904 and in shutouts, with two.
Shiffour, a senior, excelled at the midfield position. His hustling play and knack for winning balls were crucial in the success of the Sentinels in the league, and overall. Shiffour was also first-team All-AMAC, as he led Fort Hill to a 9-6 overall season and fourth in the eight-team AMAC.
Brown, a senior, was a Fort Hill co-captain and three-year starter. As a sweeper defender, he anchored a Sentinels defense that allowed 28 goals in 15 games, an average of less than two per outing. He was an exceptional passer who played under control and distributed the ball well from his defensive position.
Parker, a junior and two-year player, moved from outside midfielder to forward, and proved to be a pivotal part of the Fort Hill offense, especially in league play. He finished tied for second in the league in scoring with two goals and one assist, scored the winning goal in a 3-2 game with Allegany that clinched the City Tournament for the Sentinels, and had what proved to be the winning goal in a 4-2 victory over BW which assured Fort Hill of at least a share of the league title.
Boor, a speedy junior and two-year starte at Allegany, shared the team lead in goals with six, and also had two assists. He tied for second in the City in scoring with two goals and an assist. An unselfish player, Boor was willing to work back on defense and pressure the opponent from behind, which often times led to steals and the start of offensive attacks.
Sainz, a senior tri-captain and two-year player, had strong ball-control skills and a good field vision. A determined offensive player, he led the team in scoring and was 17th in the area with six goals, three assists and a 1.00 average. He tied for second in the league in scoring with two goals and an assist.
Shin, a senior and two-year starter, combined strength and speed to excel at the stopper position. He also scored two goals from the defensive position. He was a team leader and key performer on a defense that allowed only four goals in league play, and just 15 during a 15-game season.
Dunn, a sophomore and two-year starter at Bishop Walsh, moved to the key center midfielder position this season. He was responsible for all of BW’s defensive sets and drew the assignment of marking the other team’s top player, and also moved up on all corner kicks and set plays on throw-ins. His aggressive play was key to the Sentinels. He played every minute of every game, and scored the game-winning goal with a header off a throw-in in a 2-1 win over Keyser.
