Bobcats defeat Mt. Aloysius; Jade Belt has double-double

For the Cumberland Times-News

FROSTBURG - Six players scored in double figures and the Frostburg State men's basketball team scored 100 points for the first time this season as it got past Mt. Aloysius, 102-83, Saturday at Bobcat Arena.

FSU (3-9, 2-3) ended a three-game losing skid in the win while MTA (2-6, 1-4) is currently riding a four-game losing streak.

Of the six players in double figures, four were starters led by senior Jade Belt who netted 20 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked two shots. Senior Brian Green was second with 16 points and nine assists. Freshmen Korawn Harris and Blake Walker also scored in double figures will making their first collegiate starts. Harris had 12 and Walker scored 11.

Senior Jermaine Kapombe had 15 points and freshman Martin Fernandez hipped in 11.

As a team, FSU recorded its second best shooting performance of the season, hitting 37-of-76 baskets (48.7 percent) including a 24-of-31 effort (77.4 percent) from the foul line. The Bobcat defense forced 21 Mt. Aloysius turnovers and grabbed 11 steals.

Richard McNutt and Joe Balog led the Mounties with 20 points each while McNutt had 14 boards and Balog led all players with three baskets from beyond the three-point line.

Frostburg State held a 17-point edge at halftime (52-35) despite holding just a three-point lead (31-28) with 5:48 left in the opening half. The Bobcats closed out the remainder of the half on a 19-7 run.

Junior Juan Wansley hit a pair of free throws with 12:52 left in the second to give FSU a 21-point edge, 71-50.

The Mounties would eventually put together a 20-9 run to cut their deficit to just seven (83-76) with just 5:05 left in the game but the Bobcats pushed their lead back to double figures (88-77) just a minute and a half later. FSU would keep the pressure on and push it to a 21-point advantage (102-81) with just 19 seconds left. Kary Roberts made a late layup to bring the scoring to a close.
