DeGroat, Lee send ACM over Howard

CUMBERLAND — George DeGroat and Calvin Lee led the offense and Terrence Green and Ru White excelled on defense to spark the Allegany College Trojans to a 78-59 win over Howard in their Maryland JUCO Conference game Saturday night at Bob Kirk Arena.

DeGroat and Lee combined for 44 points and 27 rebounds, while Green and White held Howard’s leading scorer to just two field goals as the Trojans improved to 9-13 overall and 9-6 in the conference.

DeGroat led the way by hitting 10 field goals and 5-of-10 free throws. He finished with 25 points and 18 rebounds, both game highs.

Lee added 19 points and nine rebounds, Tarrelle Jackson had 18 points with a 7-for-8 showing from the foul line, and Green dished out six assists.

“We played much better tonight. We played a team game and cut down on our turnovers and shot better from the foul line,’’ said Allegany coach Mike Baker.

“George DeGroat played a great game inside. Every time he got the ball they were really pounding on him. He scored and rebounded well. So did Calvin Lee, who came off the bench, and Terrence Green and Ru White did a great job defensively on their leading scorer.”

Green and White kept Howard’s Donta Ridley in check with their defense. Ridley, averaging 20 points per game, had only 10, with six coming from the foul line.

Kyle Severance led Howard (9-12) with 13 points and Ronald Mann had 12.

The Trojans led by only five, 35-30, at halftime, but outscored Howard 43-29 in the second half.

Allegany plays again Wednesday night at Cecil, which is 19-0 and ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA Division II national poll.
