Frostburg State pushes home win streak to six

For the Cumberland Times-News

FROSTBURG - Frostburg State had four players score in double figures and held a 42-16 lead in bench points as it defeated Penn State Altoona 75-74 in AMCC men's basketball action Wednesday.

With the victory, FSU (7-15, 6-9) increased its home winning streak to six games and has now won three of its last five contests. Altoona (11-11, 8-7) has now dropped back-to-back games after a 69-40 setback against Penn State Behrend this past Saturday.

In a second half that featured six lead changes and four ties, the Bobcats couldn't put the Lions away as the visitors battled back from an 11-point deficit (66-55) at 8:26 to take a one-point lead (69-68) with 4:01 showing. FSU surged ahead, 74-70, with 1:32 to play, but Colin Geiger hit a three-pointer with 1:05 left to bring Penn State Altoona within one, 74-73.

After the two teams exchanged turnovers inside the final minute of play, freshman Brian Anderson extended the Bobcats lead with a free throw with four seconds left and Curtis Geiger missed a last second three-pointer to lift FSU to the win.

Senior Brian Green led all Frostburg State starters with 20 points while senior Dale DeBerry came off the bench to add 15, including 12 in the opening half. Anderson and freshman Jamal Bracken also came off the bench to score 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Quintin Dziabo was 12-of-14 from the floor and led all players with 28 points for the Lions. Kirk Peters chipped in 14 points and Colin Geiger had 10.

Penn State Altoona held the lead for much of the first half including an eight-point lead at both 12:31 and 10:39. FSU trailed late in the first but collected a 9-2 run to tie the game at 31 with 2:14 showing and outscored Altoona 8-3 over the rest of the opening half to lead at the break, 39-34.

FSU is back in action Saturday when it travels to Hilbert at 3 p.m.
