Maryland JUCO tournaments start tonight

CUMBERLAND - The Allegany College of Maryland men's basketball team is the sixth seed and Garrett College is the seventh seed in the Maryland JUCO Tournament, with both the Trojans and Lakers playing home games today at 7 p.m. Allegany hosts No. 11 Harford, and Garrett hosts No. 10 Rockville.

Meanwhile, the Allegany College of Maryland women's team is the second seed and the Garrett women are the fourth seed in the state tournament, which also begins tonight. Neither the Trojans nor the Lakers, however, will play until Friday. The Trojans will play the winner of tonight's play-in game between No. 7 Chesapeake and No. 10 Southern Maryland Friday, 2:30 p.m., at Anne Arundel Community College. Friday at 7:30 p.m., Garrett will play the winner of tonight's game between No. 5 Dundalk and No. 12 Harford at Anne Arundel.

Tonight's other play-in games feature No. 16 Frederick and No. 11 Howard, and No. 8 Prince George's and No. 9 Rockville.

In the men's tournament, Cecil is the top seed, followed by No. 2 Chesapeake, No. 3 Hagerstown, No. 4 Germantown, No. 5 Prince George's, No. 6 Allegany, No. 7 Garrett, No. 8 Howard, No. 9 Frederick, No. 10 Rockville, No. 11 Harford, No. 12 Catonsville, No. 13 Tacoma Park, No. 14 Dundalk, No. 15 Southern Maryland and No. 16 Anne Arundel.

The schedule and pairings are as follows: No. 1 Cecil vs. No. 16 Anne Arundel; No. 2 Chesapeake vs. No. 15 Southern Maryland; No. 3 Hagerstown vs. No. 14 Dundalk; No. 4 Germantown vs. No. 13 Tacoma Park; No. 5 Prince George's vs. No. 12 Catonsville; No. 6 Allegany vs. No. 11 Harford; No. 7 Garrett vs. No. 10 Rockville; No. 8 Howard vs. No. 9 Frederick.

The tournament concludes in Frederick Friday through Sunday, Feb. 22-24.

In the women's tournament, Hagerstown is the top seed and will play the Prince George's-Rockville winner Friday at 5:30 p.m. Cecil is seeded third, and will play the Frederick-Howard winner Friday at 12:30 p.m.

The women's tournament continues Saturday and Sunday at Anne Arundel.
