Region XX opener tips off at 8 in Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN - Fourth-seeded Potomac State College takes on fifth-seeded Allegany College of Maryland in the opening game of the Region XX, Division I men's basketball tournament tonight at Hagerstown Community College.

Tonight's game tips off at 8 o'clock, with the winner advancing to Saturday night's semifinal round.

Coach Shawn White's Catamounts won the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference regular-season championship, were runners-up in the conference tournament, and take a 17-7 overall record into tonight's game.

Eli Crawford leads the team in scoring with 17 points per game, followed by Chad Wilson with 15 and Hosea Berkley with 13.

Coach Mike Baker's Trojans are 13-14 overall after dropping an 81-80 game to Hagerstown in the Maryland JUCO Tournament quarterfinals last week. Allegany was the sixth seed in the tournament, and had beaten Harford in the opening round 93-76.

George DeGroat leads the team and is among the state leaders in scoring with 18.9 points per game, rebounds with 10.1, and field goal shooting at 63 percent. He had 29 points and 20 rebounds against Hagerstown.

Calvin Lee scored 38 points and grabbed 29 rebounds in the two JUCO Tournament games.

The Potomac State/Allegany winner will face top-seeded Chesapeake (25-3) on Saturday at 5 o'clock. The other semifinal pits third-seeded Garrett (16-10) against second-seeded and host Hagerstown (22-7) at 7 p.m.

Saturday's semifinal winners play for the Region XX championship on Sunday at 3 p.m.
