MCHENRY — Donavin Vinson scored 22 points and Potomac State took advantage of 39 trips to the free-throw line to beat Garrett 88-78 in the final game of the McDonald’s Classic Saturday at Garrett.
Chad Wilson finished with 21 points and Travis Williams had 14 for the Catamounts (4-5), who avenged an 82-71 loss to Garrett earlier in the season. Hosea Berkley and D.J. Summers had nine points.
Vinson and Wilson were named to the all-tournament team, along with Leon Rollins and Julian Pinkston of Mercyhurst Northeast and Tyrone Roach of Germantown.
Shawn Greenfield had 19 points and three steals, Terrance Taylor 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, and Gabe Leggett nine points and six rebounds for Garrett (3-2), which led 45-41 at halftime before having empty possessions on offense and fouls on defense turn the tide.
“Potomac State stayed with its game plan, didn’t fold when they got down, and did a nice job of making plays,’’ said Garrett coach Dennis Gibson. “We didn’t come off our loss last night and learn from it because we did a lot of slapping and fouling on defense.”
As a result, Potomac State was 30-for-39 from the foul line. Vinson was 7-for-8, Wilson 6-for-6 and Berkley and Summers 5-for-6.
“It was a really hard fought game that turned in to a quality win for us over a local and competitive team,’’ said Potomac State coach Shawn White.
Garrett led by seven with 11 minutes to play but was unable to hold off the Catamounts.
Garrett (3-2) will host Pitt-Titusville on Monday at 7:30. Potomac State is idle until hosting the West Virginia Wesleyan jayvees on Nov. 29.
Mercyhurst Northeast won Saturday’s first game over Montgomery-Germantown 103-73. Mercyhurst went 2-0 in the classic format.
