Allegany falls to Globe, 96-89

Trojans face No. 5 Monroe today

HAGERSTOWN — Calvin Lee and George DeGroat had huge performances for Allegany College of Maryland, but the Trojans made some key mistakes down the stretch to fall in a 96-89 loss to Globe (N.Y.) Institute of Technology Saturday in the Hagerstown Thanksgiving Classic.

Lee scored a game-best 31 points and led the team with 13 rebounds. DeGroat supported Lee by adding 23 points and 12 rebounds. Ryan Burts was unselfish to the tune of eight assists to go with nine points, and Terence Green scored eight points and dished out six assists.

The Trojans (1-4) led by two at halftime, 41-39.

Head coach Mike Baker was more encouraged by his team’s showing on Friday than he was in a 78-71 loss to Montgomery-Germantown on Tuesday.

“We played much better than we did against Germantown even though we still lost. We were scoring more on the inside, and shot our foul shots better. Down the stretch we just had a few turnovers that really hurt us.”

Globe, which began the season as the No. 12 team in Division I, was led by Mike Carrpell’s 27 points. Rob Robinson finished with 18, Steven Brignall added 14 and Victor Garcia scored 13.

Allegany will continue play in the Thanksgiving Classic today at 1 p.m. against Monroe (N.Y.) Community College. Monroe is ranked No. 5 in Division I, and received one first-place vote in the latest junior college national poll.
