FSU wins OT thriller over Waynesburg

For the Cumberland Times-News

FROSTBURG - Senior Brian Green scored a season-high 25 points to lead Frostburg State to a thrilling 99-96 overtime victory over Waynesburg in non-conference men's basketball action Monday.

The Bobcats earned their first win of the season (1-2) while handing the Yellow Jackets their first loss (2-1).

Waynesburg was ahead by four points with just 19 seconds remaining in the second half when senior Dale DeBerry made the first of two clutch three pointers for FSU to cut the deficit to one, 87-86. Waynesburg's Dan Happe was fouled on the ensuing in-bounds pass and sank two free throws to push the Yellow Jacket lead back to three, 89-86, with 12 seconds showing. Green then took a pass at the top of the three-point arc and drained it with a Waynesburg defender in his face to send the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the score changed hands three more times, but Frostburg State senior Jade Belt made a layup with 1:04 left and DeBerry made a free throw 24 seconds remaining to seal the win. FSU also held Waynesburg without a basket over the final 3:06 of overtime.

Green was 9-of-13 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point land and led the team with four assists. DeBerry was second on the team with 19 points, freshman Brian Anderson scored 17 in his first collegiate start and freshman Busha Koffa chipped in 12.

Waynesburg was led by Happe's 33 points while Tim Drakeley and Josh Parisi each scored 17.

Both squads shot better than 50 percent from floor. FSU was 37-of-68 (54.4 percent) while Waynesburg managed 32-of-59 (54.2 percent), and the two teams each made 12 three pointers. Frostburg State held a commanding lead in bench points, 49-11.

Frostburg State is at Penn State Behrend on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
