Harford beats Garrett, 88-81

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

MCHENRY - Six Harford players scored in double figures, with Rashawn Alexander and Torey Fassett scoring 20 points each, to power Harford Community College to a win over Garrett in a Maryland JUCO Conference game Wednesday night.

Harford scored 54 points in the second half in spoiling the Lakers' conference debut and improving to 4-3 overall.

The Lakers, who won at Westmoreland Tuesday night, fell to 5-3.

Garrett led 39-34 at halftime and held a double-figure lead midway through the second half. But turnovers plagued the Lakers the rest of the way, helping fuel Harford's comeback.

"We need to take care of the basketball. Turnovers have been the difference in all of our losses,'' said Garrett coach Dennis Gibson.

The Lakers led by 11 at the 10-minute mark of the second half. That was reduced to two with 6:30 left, when Garrett had six consecutive turnovers.

Shawn Greenfield had 17 points and Dale Taylor hit four three-point goals and had 16 points for Garrett. Terrance Taylor had 11 and Glen Izevbigie 10.

Garrett, which began the year 3-0, is 2-3 in its last five games.

"We have a team that will get better if we learn to take care of the basketball,'' Gibson said. "We score and play hard on defense, but at times we're so unselfish that we try to make passes to people who really aren't open and when we have a better shot where we're at. Our kids have to recognize that."

Garrett will host Howard in a conference game on Saturday at 7 p.m. The late Dave Martin, longtime assistant coach and former player, will be remembered during a pre-game presentation Saturday.
