Frostburg shocks Medaille

FROSTBURG — Jade Belt had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds and five Frostburg State scorers reached double figures as the Bobcats surprised Medaille, 91-80, in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon.

Belt also had five steals and Brian Green scored 16 points and dished out five assists for the Bobcats (2-6 overall, 1-3 AMCC).

After a four-game losing streak, FSU Coach Webb Hatch changed the lineup with two underclassmen answering the call and posting career highs. Freshman Jamal Bracken had 16 points, five rebounds and five steals, and sophomore Paul Shockley, who averaged 4.6 points in 13.7 minutes last season, had 12 points and seven rebounds.

The teams traded the early lead five times until the 4:20 mark when the Bobcats pulled away by posting a 10-point lead.

Medaille (6-2, 1-2) battled back to get to within three before FSU rallied behind 11 first-half points by Dale DeBerry. DeBerry got into foul trouble early but finished the game with 17 points.

Medaille got to within one midway through the first half but Frostburg’s fullcourt press led to 18 second-half turnovers, with nine being steals.

FSU shot a season-high 80 percent (20-for-25) from the free throw line.

The Mavericks shot 52 percent from the field but were plagued by 27 turnovers.

The Bobcats play again Dec. 16 at Marymount (Va.) at 4 p.m.
