Brett Favre can't stop. But he needs to.He's put the Green Bay Packers squarely on the spot with its loving and community-ownership fan base.

We talked here on Mothers Day about how much we love all of the moms in the old neighborhood who not only allowed our love for baseball to grow, but encouraged it by not allowing us in the house during the summer unless it was to eat dinner or come out of an electrical storm.

Just when you think the Baltimore Orioles have come to the bump in the road that will finally detour their season into the last-place oblivion every baseball expert had forecast them for in the offseason, they go and put together a good seven-to-10-game stretch of baseball and continue to buck the odds.

Take me in to the ballgame ...

The annual baseball trip this summer was to Phoenix. Not cool. In fact, it's the most uncool place I've ever been to: 112 degrees on Saturday; 115 degrees on Sunday. And if I hear one more person say, "Oh, but it was a dry heat ..." I'm going to warm up an oven to 115 degrees, ask the person to stick his head in it for a half-hour and then ask him how comfortable he was in that dry heat.

There is a man who was tagged with what could be viewed as being an ominous nickname, depending on one’s line of work, by his coach of many years ago when the man played youth baseball as a boy

As some folks around hold this notion that I am the grizzled, well-traveled sports journalist who has covered the world - for which I am extremely flattered - much of what I really do at work usually hits home whenever I am asked what I find to be the most astonishing occurrence in the world of sports from the perspective I hold.

ABC/ESPN, of course, is delighted with its Boston Celtics-Los Angeles Lakers NBA Finals match-up, as all we’ve seen for the past month are highlights from the epic battles the teams waged during the 1980s.

On the same day the Baltimore Orioles announced they will host a 1979 Turn Back the Clock celebration at Camden Yards to honor the 1979 American League champions, the 2008 Orioles turned back the clock themselves, turning in a performance the likes of which seemed to take place a couple of times a week with the '79 O's.

As all of you did, I enjoyed the outstanding coverage of Fort Hill's softball state championship in the Sunday Times-News provided by sports writer Mike Mathews. There isn't a finer sports writer anywhere and we're lucky to have Mike's words and insights on these pages. Not to mention his steady hand on each of the crazed evenings we experience here in the office once game results start pouring in.
